Costa Rica General InformationCosta Rica is Central America's special jewel. Nestled between Nicaragua and Panama on the Central America isthmus, it has a reputation for being an oasis of calm among its turbulent neighbors. Costa Rica is a democratic and peaceful country famous for its natural environment and for its efforts in helping to bring lasting peace to a troubled region. The tiny country is a land of dense jungles, active volcanoes and pristine white sand beaches. A third of the population lives in the temperate Central Valley that houses the modern capital of San Jose. The country is also known as the Switzerland of Central America because of its high living standard and temperate climate. Costa Rica is a tropical country and experiences only two seasons: wet and dry. The dry season is 'generally between December and April, and the wet season or "green season" lasts the rest of the year. Temperatures vary little between season; average temperature range from 60-80 degrees. The country's biodiversity attracts nature lovers from all over the world. Costa Rica is home to 850 recorded bird species, including the resplendent quetzel, hummingbirds, macaws and toucans. The tropical rain forests have over 1400 tree species and provide a number of habitats for the country's wildlife including four types of monkey, sloth, armadillos and jaguars. A quarter of all land is protected in national parks, biological preserves, wildlife refuges and private reserves. This area of the Osa Peninsula is by far the most remote and beautiful on the entire pacific coast. The coastline is part of a mammoth marine ecosystem. More than one hundred thousand acres of mangrove wetlands and one thousand miles of fresh and salt-water rivers, estuaries and tributaries interact with the Pacific Ocean through tides which provide for an incredible abundance of marine life. This area of the Pacific is south of the trade winds and therefore characterized by gentle swells and breezes. Accommodations
The rustic atmosphere here offers a very unique beach and primary jungle experience. All rooms are private, are completely screened in and have incredible ocean views (approximately 60 meters from the beach. The main resort, two stories and approximately 3500 sq. ft. was recently hand built using only fallen hardwoods and bamboo. DiningWe go to great extents to ensure that all the meals we serve will not only taste great but will also provide our guests with a balanced diet of truly fresh and healthy foods. A very complete variety of fruits and vegetables are brought in twice a week and some fruits and veggies, including pineapples, bananas, yuccas, etc., are grown here in our gardens. We also squeeze our own fruit and vegetable juices. All our breads are received daily from our nearby home-style bakery. We fish daily to ensure only the freshest seafood will be served. We have an abundance of open water fish available from yellow fin tuna to wahoo, as well as bottom fish such as, red snapper, sea bass and snook. Local ranches provide us with fresh meats, eggs and poultry. We are also excited to offer Special Diet and Vegetarian meal plans depending on program chosen and the individual needs of our guests. What to BringCosta Rica is a Spanish speaking country, however you will find that many people do speak some English. The people are very friendly and treat tourists well. However, as in any country, there are thieves, and it is important to pay attention to avoid having your things stolen. Never leave your bags unattended at any time. Leave your expensive jewelry and other belongings at home. When taking a taxi, ask for the price ahead of time. Most places will take American dollars. However, if you want to exchange your dollars into colones, you can do that at the bank at the airport. The current exchange rate is also listed there. Traveling to a foreign country is an exciting adventure and it is important to be prepared for anything. We recommend the following list as a guide to use while packing. Valid Passport OR Driver's License AND Certified Birth Certificate * Bathing suit (at least 2, 3 is better) * shorts (fast drying clothes are best) * Sun hat * Sun block * lip balm * Sunglasses * t-shirts * At least one pair of durable long pants * Good hiking shoes or boots * Comfortable tennis shoes * Light-weight rain jacket or poncho * Flashlight with extra batteries * Insect repellent * Anti-itch ointment * Washcloths * Toothbrush, etc * Beach towels * Seasickness medication * Camera/film * Reading materials * Binoculars Volunteer ProgramFeel free to apply if: You feel strong and healthy in body, mind, and spirit. Hard work in a humid climate can challenge even balanced, healthy bodies. You work well as a team player and part of a family. You know that even the smallest task is important and part of the big picture. You are happy, upbeat and friendly and we will make our guests feel like they are part of our big, warm family while they are here. You understand that it is a warm, humid climate, with lots of animals, including insects. People with strong fears of insects should not apply. This is the rainforest and all that lives in it, live with us. That is what makes it so exciting and wonderful! We are looking for individuals skilled in areas of:
Each volunteer must stay for a 14-day trial period where she/he will work 4 hours per day. A $20/day charge will include meals and accommodations. Bringing a tent is required for the trial period. If a long-term agreement is reached, it is possible for you to move to a rancho, depending on availability. We feel it is in the best interest of us and the volunteer not to make any commitment regarding long-term arrangements until we have spent time together and you can decide if jungle living is for you. At the end of the orientation period we will discuss together the possibilities of a long-term arrangement. The options are: The volunteer will continue paying $15/day plus 4 hours work for food and accommodations. The volunteer will work 8 hours/day in exchange for meals and board. Either party does not wish to extend the stay. We are open to the creativity process in creating a workable situation that benefits all parties. For instance, if you have a skill that we can charge our guests for, such as massage, you will be able to make your own money and the arrangement will change. Don't forget to check out our tips for what to bring in order to make your stay as comfortable as possible. In addition to those items, also include:
How to Apply: Name, Address, Phone, email Objective: Please tell us all about yourself, why you want to come, your other interests and your future plans. If you wish, feel free to send a photo to help us get to know you better. Because of our remote location, it is important that we know as much about each other as possible before you get here. If you do not hear from us right away, please do not take this as a rejection as our program is always evolving and new people are needed at different times.
